About Angela Okajima Kempinas
Angela Okajima Kempinas is a ceramic artist whose work transcends boundaries, blending contemporary aesthetics with traditional techniques. Born and raised in New York, Angela first learned the foundations of working with clay from a female potter in Shigaraki, Japan. At the same time, she was introduced to the works of Yagi Kazuo, and the avant-garde Japanese ceramic group, Sōdeisha. Inspired and influenced by this hybrid introduction to the possibilities of clay, she went on to study at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Kyushu, Japan for one year.
Nurtured in macro-New York within a micro-Japanese household, Angela's art is undoubtedly influenced by her dual heritage. Her forms which may seem familiar, are intentionally abstract and non-representational. She respects ceramic history and traditions, but is not bound to them, and while clay as a material is often associated with practicality, Angela creates non-functional works for the wall, with the belief that art and beauty serve the profound purpose of nourishing the soul. Invoking life, energy, and spirit, Angela’s ceramic wall art share elements of both painting and sculpture and charge any space they inhabit with beauty and positivity.
