Since we started Rei Cosmetics, people have asked us how we came up with our company name and what it means.

Those familiar with Japanese know that phonetically identical words can have many different meanings depending on the context and kanji derived from Chinese characters. As such, numerous kanji characters can signify "Rei." A cursory Google search yields over 60 kanji characters pronounced as “Rei”.

So which Rei are we?

Gratitude, Respect, Courtesy. This character, commonly used in Japan, embodies a deeply ingrained philosophy of politeness, gratitude, and respect for others. It also signifies good manners and courtesy. Strive, Encourage, Hard Work.  Symbolizing resilience, strength, and teamwork indispensable for overcoming obstacles, this character encapsulates the essence of putting in diligent effort while uplifting others to strive for excellence. At Rei Cosmetics, we believe that human connections are critical to our success and aspire to support you in realizing your goals and aspirations.

玲 

Exquisite, Gem, Serenity. "Rei" evokes the tranquil sound of wind chimes in a summer breeze or the resonant toll of bells in a serene Zen temple. It conveys the delicacy of gems and is frequently used in names; Rei Kawakubo, the famous Japanese fashion designer for Comme des Garçon uses this character in her first name. Aligned with our vision, Rei Cosmetics aspires to present you with exquisite cosmetic gems from Japan.

麗 

Beauty, Elegance, Grace. The Japanese word for "kirei" containing this character means beautiful, connoting purity and refinement. It describes not only physical beauty but also an individual's inner radiance. At Rei Cosmetics, we extol beauty in all forms and encourage you to embrace and find your own "Rei." 

In essence, we don't believe that our company name has a single meaning. Rei embodies a spectrum of meanings, each resonating with distinct facets of our philosophy.

You won't see us referencing the kanji characters in our communications to you, but the essence of Rei, in all its manifestations, permeates our ethos.
